My mate is selling some records. He invited me around to have first picks on stuff he has for sale. He is selling at a markets tomorrow. So I went around there and thought there’d be a few albums and he had boxes of the stuff. Awesome! A great selection of pop punk and 80’s and 90’s indie stuff. I asked him what Screeching Weasel he had and there was the Ramones cover LP which I already have and never listen to anyway and he also had this. Never seen the yellow cover version before. This is a bootleg and apparently Ben Weasel tells all to not buy it if they see it cos they never got a cent out of it. Well I don’t own Boogada on vinyl so I snapped it up. Awesome! He gave me a decent discount and I got some sweet albums. Tomorrow he is sure to sell tons of his stuff. If I had more money to spare, I would have bought tons more stuff cos his collection is awesome. Yep. Woohoo!
A BUNCH OF ALBUMS I BOUGHT IN 2011 THAT TOTALLY BLEW MY MIND - VINYL VERSION.
From left to right, top to bottom:
THE BLACK ANGELS – Phosphene Nightmare 10”
One of 2 Black Angels records released on record store day, this release is worth your time and money if only for the sweet sounding track titled The Boat Song.
YOUNG GOVERNOR – Where It’s Quiet 10”
Thanks to Andy Burnout for hooking up with this sweet 4 track of awesomeness. When not playing screaming bloody hardcore in Fucked Up, guitarist Ben Cook, aka The Guv, is dishing out power pop garage rock with the likes of Young Governor. You need this.
TOUCHE AMORE – Parting The Sea Between Brightness And Me LP
I bought this album purely from the hype that preceded its release and found my intuition was correct. A great album of hardcore mixing screaming vocals and melodious guitar work.
DEAFHEAVEN – Roads To Judah LP
It sounds like Wolves In The Throneroom and that works for me. Extreme melodic black metal.
CHUCK RAGAN – Covering Ground LP
Sounds like Bruce Springsteen. Need I say more? It’s good.
RIVAL SONS – Pressure & Time LP
Led Zeppelin meets The Stooges meets The Answer. Yep, you got it. Great 70’s sounding rock n roll with great hooks and wailing vocals.
AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD – Tao Of The Dead LP
Can this band do any wrong? Didn’t think so.
FIREWORKS – Gospel LP
Bit late to the party on these guys but this is awesome pop / punk, not unlike Blink-182 / New Found Glory, etc.
BORIS – Heavy Rocks LP
Although they already have released an album called Heavy Rocks, this is no reissue. A completely new album of brutal heavy Boris tunes. And once again, it doesn’t fail. Boris are THAT band. Not boundaries, no limitations, nothing. Just Boris. It is what it is. And that is why it’s awesome.
LEADFINGER – We Make The Music LP
The Replacements meets Roky Erickson. If those names mean anything to you then so will this album. I fuckin’ love this record.
EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY – Take Care, Take Care, Take Care LP
If you can get past the incredible packaging (the packaging unfolds and turns into a house) and actually get around to playing the record, you will find some of the most incredible music contained within. There’s no need for vocals, Explosions In The Sky will take you on a journey through your own mind into places you never knew existed and you will love it. Also, did I mention the packaging turns into a house? Awesomeness!
RESTORATIONS – Restorations LP
Saw a review online that said this was like a grittier version of The Gaslight Anthem so I laid down the $10 and bought it. No regrets. This is great stuff!
SCREECHING WEASEL – First World Manifesto LP
There is no bad Screeching Weasel records. Ben is a genius and this album just proves that even after a long hiatus, he still delivers the goods.
CAROLINE – Verdugo Hills LP
Sweet, mellow, laid back songs from Japan. Her voice is incredible. It’s perfect for relaxation and possibly Tai Chi.
VICTIMS – A Dissident LP
Heavy, brutal, punk as fuck. This is awesome. Again, quite late to the party on these guys but they delivered.
MARISSA NADLER – Marissa Nadler LP
Having been a huge fan of Marissa’s music for quite some time now, knowing she was releasing a new album through the kickstarter campaign, little did we know that what she would deliver would be a true masterpiece. This really is a beautiful record. Her voice, her music, her demeanor… it’s all fantastic.
DWARVES – The Dwarves Are Born Again LP
There is no bad Dwarves album. They are all great. That is all.
FUCKED UP – David Comes To Life LP
With their explosive live shows and a grasp on how to make concept albums work, David Comes To Life was most definitely one album that you need to hear before you die. It is a work of art. Even though 18 songs sounds like a chore to get through, it’s 18 songs you need in your life.
ALL PIGS MUST DIE – God Is War LP
This is severely brutal and heavy. Sounds like it’s destroying your senses and beating you upside the head with a hubcap.
BALANCE AND COMPOSURE – Separation LP
Melodic rock that probably borders on emo and punk, this album is chock full of goodness with great songs that you will sing along to as your anthems for a new tomorrow.
THE LOVE ME NOTS – The Demon And The Devotee LP
Sexy and groovy, this garage rock trio from some place in the middle of nowhere just continue to churn out killer tunes like it’s no big deal. I love this group and it has nothing to do with the fact I think Nicole is a babe.
THE HORRIBLE CROWES – Elsie LP
Probably one of the most anticipated albums of the year, Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon teams up with Ian Perkins and delivers one of the most thought provoking albums of the year. Great lyrics, incredible songwriting, fantastic sounds. You need this.
TITLE FIGHT – Shed LP
Everyone owns this. Or it appears that way if other people’s 2011 lists are anything to go by. It’s good. But not worth $56 a ticket to see them.
BASEMENT – I Wish I Could Stay Here LP
I liked the melodies in this. Reminded me a lot of And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and that works for me. It’s kinda emo melodic punk stuff. I hate using that kinda terminology but you get what I mean.
GRAILS – Deep Politics LP
This all shades of amazingness. If you haven’t heard Grails then you need to get on this shit NOW! This record is just off the chain (as the kids say). Awesome stuff.
THE WONDER YEARS – Suburbia I’ve Given You All And Now I’m Nothing LP
One of the newer pop punk bands that I think are at the top of their game. This is excellent songwriting combined with high energy playing and big hooks. Top stuff!
VARIOUS ARTISTS – Mixed Signals LP
Released by Run For Cover Records, this compilation is an awesome introduction to bands (if you’ve never heard them before) or a great revisit. I loved every single song on this album. The packaging is sweet, the vinyl looks fab and the booklet was great! Not a dud track on here. You will like.
BORIS – Attention Please LP
Another Boris album released that is just as good as all the others they did this year (the band were scheduled for 4 albums this year and they delivered – 3 on Sargent House and 1 on Daymare. Again, Boris can’t go wrong. They have given themselves the best platform by just being themselves. If you don’t know Boris yet then you still have time to fix this.
Other notable mentions not pictured:
Various Artists – David’s Town LP
The guys from Fucked Up decided to make an album of fake bands from some fake town and have you think you had discovered some new gems. It’s a great idea and the talent found within was nothing short of great.
Aficionado – Aficionado LP
Get this record if only for the first track. It’s catchy and awesome with a cool chorus.
Some of my gave purchases so far…
Lookout Records pressings of 2 Screeching Weasel LPs.
I will take photos of the things I buy. You will be amazed. Japan is a record shopping dream.
Tonight’s episode is another long show with Damo and Peta talking antics, Frenzal Rhomb, cheap tour merchandise, leaked albums, the death of the CD and the awesomeness of vinyl, the randomness of Google, why Rancid won’t tour Australia anymore, swollen ankles in moshpit tragedies, the girl at the post office, fisting, and so much more. If you wanna get started on this episode right now, click here and open your ears. If you would rather download the file as an mp3 to listen to later, click here. Have fun!

Never thought I would ever buy a copy of this magazine but it had a screeching weasel article in it so I felt obliged to part ways with the cash to read at work.
