Ok, last story for the night and then my break is over and I need to finish this work I have editing my articles for the next issue of HEAVY. But yeah, anyway… This single. Here’s the scenario: in 2002 I went to the uk and lived there for 3 months. Sometime in July I was shopping with my mate Emma and we walked into the HMV in Oxford street. I heard music start up downstairs and headed down to check it out. This awesome garage band was on stage tearing the place up. I was looking at them thinking “that looks like The Bellrays but why would they be playing here in London? Nobody knows who they are!” and then I looked to my left and saw a poster that said LIVE INSTORE BY THE BELLRAYS! I flipped. Total excited face. I stayed. I watched. I enjoyed. After the show they said they would sign records. They said you needed to buy a record before you got it signed. I didn’t hear that bit and just grabbed this 7” and lined up. This security dude came along to check everyones receipts. I was like Oh shit! and needed to think quickly. The guy asked me for my receipt. I just blurted out “oh my girlfriend has it.” and he said “where is she?” and I pointed and said “that one over there!” and pointed to a bunch of girls looking through the records. He said “what’s her name?” and I said “oh, Emma” as it was the first name that came to mind since I was there with my mate Emma anyway. The dude called out EMMA! and Emma came around the corner but didn’t hear him. I was like “fuck! What if she hears him!?!?!?” and he called again EMMA! and she didn’t even acknowledge it. So he said “ok, don’t worry about it” and checked the guy behind me. I was like thinking “JESUS CHRIST! That was close!!!!” I was like 4th in line so if I had shown no receipt I would have had to go buy it and then go to the back of the line which was super long. So i got to meet them and they heard my accent and Lisa the singer says “you’re Australian?” and I said “hell yes! You have no idea how bizarre it is seeing you playing here in the uk cos I didn’t think anyone else knew who you were” she then told me how much she loved Aussie rock and wanted to see Radio Birdman. Good choice! I then said goodbye and took my record to the cashier, said bye to the security as I paid for it and left. He looked confused. Brilliant! I told Emma what had happened and she said “good thing I’m deaf or was daydreaming cos I had no idea”. Good times! #thebellrays #bellrays #vinyl #records #radiobirdman
My mate is selling some records. He invited me around to have first picks on stuff he has for sale. He is selling at a markets tomorrow. So I went around there and thought there’d be a few albums and he had boxes of the stuff. Awesome! A great selection of pop punk and 80’s and 90’s indie stuff. I asked him what Screeching Weasel he had and there was the Ramones cover LP which I already have and never listen to anyway and he also had this. Never seen the yellow cover version before. This is a bootleg and apparently Ben Weasel tells all to not buy it if they see it cos they never got a cent out of it. Well I don’t own Boogada on vinyl so I snapped it up. Awesome! He gave me a decent discount and I got some sweet albums. Tomorrow he is sure to sell tons of his stuff. If I had more money to spare, I would have bought tons more stuff cos his collection is awesome. Yep. Woohoo!
